Celebrating the Light of the World

Dear Friends at Calvin Church,
In my daily meditations for Advent, I have been focusing on Jesus being sent
to be the light of the world. Though we see and hear of much darkness in
our world, we know that God has given us His son to be our light. We know
that darkness is the absence of light. In John 1:4,5 we read, In Him was life,
and the life is the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the
darkness has not overcome it. And in John 1:9 we read, the true light that
enlightens every man was coming into the world.
Light is a fascinating creation of our loving God. Of the estimated 2 million
galaxies in the observable universe, there are thought to be 400 sextillion
vigintillion (that’s a real number) photons of starlight. This light travels far
and fast. Light serves many important functions: it interrupts and illuminates
darkness. It reveals once hidden things and invites us to notice what we
otherwise couldn’t see.
This advent please celebrate with me the light of the world. Not simply the
scientific light we so need, but the Light of Love God chose to send us in the
midst of our own darkness – a light that came in the most unlikely form: not
that of a ray or beam or a flicker, but in the form of a vulnerable child who
also happened to be God’s own Son. His light is the one that changed
everything and set into motion the most captivating rescue mission and love
story.
Wishing you a bright a bright and blessed Christmas!
